The world of bodybuilding often explores the numerous benefits of various steroids. These compounds, derived from the male hormone testosterone, can dramatically enhance muscular development and strength. However, being aware of their potential side effects is equally important. One such downside is a process called aromatization.
What is Aromatization?
Aromatization is a biochemical process where a substance with androgenic activity is converted into a substance with estrogenic activity. This might sound complex, so let’s break it down. Essentially, the androgenic activity of anabolic steroids gets converted into the female sex hormone, estrogen. This leads to excess female hormones in the male body, resulting in undesirable side effects.

Anti-aromatase Drugs: An Overview
Anti-aromatase drugs interact with aromatase in the same way a steroid would, but without transforming into estrogen. This keeps the aromatase occupied, thereby preventing the steroid molecule from binding with it. Let’s discuss a few examples of anti-aromatase drugs: Proviron, Cytadren, and Arimidex.
Proviron is unique among anabolic steroids due to its anti-aromatase activity. It is medically used to treat male sexual disorders. Interestingly, it interacts with aromatase and androgen receptors when it enters the body. This leads to the effect of making muscles appear “harder,” enhancing vascularity and definition. However, the exact cause of this effect still needs to be fully understood. Therefore, the dosage of Proviron must be tailored to individual needs and should consider the dose of other steroids being used.
Cytadren, a synthetic anti-aromatase drug, is a favorite among bodybuilders. This is not primarily because of its estrogen-combatting properties but for its ability to suppress cortisol production. Cortisol is a hormone that inhibits protein synthesis, and stopping it can aid muscle growth. However, Cytadren usage must be carefully monitored as it can cause side effects like lethargy and depression in individuals with a genetic predisposition.
Arimidex stands out as a potent synthetic anti-aromatase drug. Despite being highly effective, its relatively high cost often prevents it from being a popular choice among bodybuilders. The half-life of Arimidex is approximately 60 hours, meaning frequent daily usage isn’t required, providing a particular convenience factor for users.
Estrogen Antagonists: An In-depth Look
Estrogen antagonists, while not directly preventing aromatization, play an essential role in antiestrogen therapy. They work by occupying estrogen receptors without activating them, thus preventing the usual estrogen from binding to the receptor and activating it. Two notable estrogen antagonists used in bodybuilding are Nolvadex and Clomid.
Nolvadex, also known as tamoxifen citrate, is unique because it can act as an estrogen and an estrogen antagonist, depending on the tissue it interacts with. As a result, Nolvadex contributes to a harder, more defined muscle appearance when used during a steroid cycle. However, some athletes have reported that it slightly reduces the effectiveness of their steroid cycle due to its antiestrogenic effect on the liver, which leads to reduced insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) production.
Clomid, or clomiphene citrate, shares similar properties with tamoxifen, despite being a synthetic estrogen itself. Interestingly, Clomid can restore spermatogenesis and testosterone production in the body. This is achieved through its direct impact on the hypothalamus-pituitary-testes axis, making Clomid an ideal candidate for use at the end of a steroid cycle. It’s worth mentioning that Clomid, although less effective as an antiestrogen than tamoxifen, has proved to be a valuable part of antiestrogen therapy.
A Note on Dosage and Side Effects
As with any drug, the dosages of antiestrogens should be approached with caution. An excess blockage of estrogen can lead to undesired side effects such as decreased libido, depression, and mood swings. Therefore, the goal is always to maintain a balance – mitigating the side effects of aromatization without completely blocking estrogen, which is necessary for the body’s healthy functioning.
